Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History month

June was Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History (GRT) month, a time to celebrate the community and acknowledge the challenges they face. Through education and raising awareness, the month aims to tackle prejudice and amplify the voices of Gypsies, Roma and Travellers in wider society.

The theme for 2024, of ‘What does family mean to you?’ focuses on the meaning of family amongst the GRT community. Through our Equity outreach programme, our team work alongside families to provide Covid-19 vaccinations, wellbeing checks and Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccinations across Sussex and Surrey. As part of these services, the team have been providing home visits to the GRT community, in addition to working with local authorities, councils, food banks, housing organisations and charities to target and engage with GRT communities.

This engagement is part of a wider ABC priority to ensure access to healthcare for those who are not registered at a GP and without ongoing access to primary care. To provide this care, our team have attended GRT events across Sussex and Surrey, including the Romany Night in Epsom on 15th June where we provided free health checks to attendees.
